La nuova pavimentazione dei marciapiedi di Corso Umberto I

Dopo la sospensione dei lavori per la pausa estiva, da poco sono ricominciati i lavori per il nuovo look dei marciapiedi del Corso. E’ stato dato l'ultimo livello di asfalto sulla strada, il cosidetto tappetino e sono stati realizzati dei passaggi pedonali fra un marciapiede e l'altro, tipo le strisce bianche, ma utilizzando le stesse mattonelle di porfido dei marciapiedi. Al centro, dove la strada si allarga per il bivio, di fronte al viale, è stata realizzata una rotatoria al pari della strada. E' solo un accenno di senso di rotatoria. Comunque è ancora da decidere se mantenerla o no.

 La settimana scorsa l'impresa aggiudicataria  la “Luciani “di Casoli, sotto la spinta della Direzione dei Lavori per nulla soddisfatta della posa in opera del selciato, voleva risistemare tutti i difetti (tantissimi) che erano stati evidenziati un pò da tutti i torricellani. Purtroppo non ha potuto dare inizio ai lavori perchè la scorta delle mattonelle e dei cubetti di porfido si era quasi esaurita a causa di furtarelli. Si proprio così, qualcuno si è “fregato” le mattonelle di porfido, e non solo... anche  il cemento, la sabbia e alcuni arnesi.

 Ora bisogna aspettare che arrivano quelle nuove per continuare i lavori.

 E a quanto sembra ci vorrà molto tempo per risistemare tutto, perché moltissimi sono i difetti: mattonelle non pareggianti che formano dei fastidiosi rialzi su cui qualcuno ha già inciampato andando a finire per terra, ruote dei cubetti che non combaciano con le mattonelle, malta di rifinitura messa malissimo, inoltre è stato lasciato tutto sporco di cemento  senza  pulirlo con l’acido per far risaltare i colori.

 La Direttrice dei lavori, Arch. Francesca Piccoli, originaria di Torricella, ci si è dedicata molto a  curare la realizzazione della nuova pavimentazione, ma ora è delusa ed amareggiata. Tutto il tempo passato a disegnare il progetto per fare qualcosa di carino è valso a nulla. Ogni volta che “girava gli occhi” o che non era presente, l’impresa subappaltatrice, di Napoli, faceva come gli pareva. Ora però è decisa a tutto: se non si riparano le tante imperfezioni, non firmerà lo stato di avanzamento.

L’impresa Luciani ha capito ed ha ammesso che è stato fatto un lavoro scadente e adesso vuole metterci riparo.

 Anche perché c’è da appaltare il lavoro della scalinata de “la rue di giuannielle” e i due marciapiedi, della farmacia e della banca. Se non ripara quello che è stato fatto difficilmente gli sarà affidato il prosieguo dell’appalto.

 Infine una bella notizia: Sembrava che dovevamo aspettare il prossimo anno per la piantumazione degli alberi mentre ad ottobre, fra meno di un mese, saranno messi a dimora. Sì!! Sono stati scelti. Dopo tante discussioni alla fine ….. si è tornati sul vecchio, caro  ligustro. Sì, quello che c’era prima. Dopo tutto, si è detto, ha resistito a tante invernate, è stato “sempre verde” e si è mantenuto sempre sui 4-5 metri di altezza senza superare i balconi del primo piano delle abitazioni del Corso, quindi corrispondente a tutte la caratteristiche richieste, ed allora perché cambiare?

Ormai faceva parte di Torricella, quindi ….. bentornato caro ligustro.

Il marciapiede di destra con la nuova pavimentazione. Al centro le mattonelle di porfido rettangolari e di varie dimensioni, e di vari colori sulla tonalità del marrone. Ai lati due camminamenti realizzati con cerchi concentrici di cubetti di porfido. Purtroppo molte mattonelle non sono state posate allo stesso livello e qualcuna forma dei rialzi su cui già in molti hanno inciampato. La chiesetta del  cimitero 

Questa è una notizia vecchia già di qualche anno ma che in molti mi hanno chiesto di menzionare.

E’ stata restaurata la chiesetta del cimitero, quella dove viene accolto il feretro prima dell’ultima benedizione del prete. In particolare è stato restaurato l’altare e i suoi addobbi. Hanno curato il tutto alcune donne con a capo Germana Piccone. Oltre alla pitturazione delle pareti, alle nuove panche in rovere per far sedere i parenti del defunto ed ai lumi in ferro battuto, sull’altare è stato posto un magnifico quadro disegnato su seta da un’artista torricellana che vive in Francia, Rosa Di Luzio e una signora anziana di 90 anni, Annina Di Legge (di papanarde), ha realizzato i ricami su una tovaglia di lino che copre l’altare.

  Uomini Illustri di Torricella Peligna

 Quest’estate, il 30 luglio,  è stato presentato al pubblico di Torricella il libro “Uomini illustri di Torricella Peligna” . Era da molto tempo che Salvatore Copertino ci diceva che aveva realizzato quest’opera ma che purtroppo mancavano i fondi per poterlo stampare . Finalmente, con il patrocinio del Comune di Torricella Peligna e il cofinanziamento di Maiella Verde, quest’anno si è potuto stampare e distribuire gratuitamente a tutti gli interessati  e chi volesse averlo può trovarlo all’agenzia turistica di Elio Porreca.

Il libro, che racconta la vita di una trentina di personaggi illustri  di Torricella vissuti fra il gli ultimi anni del 1800 ed i giorni nostri, è stato doviziosamente curato con belle fotografie e ricerche storiche da Salvatore Copertino e suo figlio Fabrizio.

Vivono a Chieti ma sono originari di Torricella e spesso ritornano a trovare parenti ed amici. Salvatore è un affermato fotografo artistico con alle spalle numerose mostre fotografiche. Inoltre da sempre ha curato anche l’aspetto giornalistico pubblicando  saltuariamente un periodico intitolato “Materiali”.

Ultimamente è uscita  un’altra pubblicazione “artistica”, edito da “Tracce” di Pescara (www.tracce.org),  si intitola “Il fiore della poesia teatina” e mette a confronto delle bellissime fotografie di Copertino con delle poesie composte da poeti di Chieti .

  Il  Monastero

Pensava che quest’estate si potesse finire ma ci vuole ancora un po’ di tempo. Forse si farà l’inaugurazione per la prossima primavera. Don Giustino Rossi, il monaco benedettino che sta realizzando il restauro della vecchia abitazione di famiglia, a Riga Tre Confini, per farne un monastero benedettino, non si perde d’animo, “siamo nelle mani della Provvidenza e vedrai che in qualche modo arriveremo all’inaugurazione” mi diceva l’ultima volta che sono stato a trovarlo.

Le mura, il tetto,  i solai, i divisori sono tutti finiti ora bisogna passare agli impianti idraulici agli intonaci, alle mattonelle, agli infissi. Occorrono ancora un po’ di soldi. Don Giustino ha stimato in circa 140.000 euro la somma che occorre per concludere il tutto.

Fra l’altro ringrazia  tutti noi del sito per l’annuncio che abbiamo messo sulla Home page.

L’altro giorno mi ha telefonato per dirmi che era arrivato un bonifico addirittura dall’Uruguay, da Montevideo, però non sapeva chi l’aveva fatto e avrebbe voluto saperlo per avere il modo di ringraziare. Noi sappiamo che nel periodo di apertura del sito ci sono stati circa 40 contatti dall’Uruguay ma nessuno ha scritto sulla guest book del sito oppure si è messo in contatto con uno di noi.

Se il benefattore lo ha fatto perché ha letto l’annuncio sul sito è pregato di farlo sapere, Grazie.

 Work on the Pavements

 Work on the new look for the pavements of the Corso has recently begun again, after it had been suspended for the summer break. The final layer of asphalt was laid on the road, the so-called “mat” surface layer. They have also created pedestrian crossings between one pavement and the other, of the white stripe kind, but using the same porphyry stones as on the pavements. In the centre, where the road widens at the fork, in front of the Viale, they have made a roundabout, but level with the road. It is merely a hint suggesting a roundabout. Anyway, they still have not decided whether to keep it or not.

 Last week, the firm of contractors, “Luciani” of Casoli, urged on by the Director of works, who was not at all satisfied with the way the paving stones had been laid, wanted to correct all the many mistakes that had been spotted by all the Torricellans. Unfortunately, they could not begin this work due to the stock of tiles and porphyry stones being almost completely used up due to pilferage. Yes, that’s right, someone had stolen the porphyry tiles – and not only that… they’d also taken cement, sand and several tools.

 Now we have to wait for new a new supply to arrive in order to continue the works.

 Now it seems that it will take a long time to sort it all out again, because there are many defects: uneven tiles are a nuisance and several people have already tripped on these and fallen down; circles of cuboids that don’t fit in with the rectangular tiles; the finishing grout has been placed really badly; and, worst of all, it has all been left in a filthy state as they have not used any acid to clean the cement - which would make the colours show up.

 The Director of Works, Architect Francesca Piccoli, originally from Torricella, has spent a great deal of time on taking care of  creating this new pavement, but now she is feeling disappointed and bitter. All that time spent on designing a project to create something nice has been wasted. Every time that she “turned her head” or was absent, the people from the subcontracting firm, from Naples, did whatever they liked. Now, however, she has set her mind to it: if they don’t fix all the many imperfections, she won’t sign the progress form. The Luciani firm has understood and has admitted to having carried out sub-standard work and wishes to put themselves in the clear.

 Also because they need to contract out the work for the stairway of the “rue di Giuannielle” and the two pavements, in front of the pharmacy and in front of the bank. If they don’t first repair the one they’ve done, it is unlikely that they’ll be given the follow-on contract.

 Finally some good news: It had looked as if we’d have to wait until next year for the planting of the trees, but in October, in less than one month, they will be given their new homes. Yes!! They have been selected. After so many discussions, in the end ….. they have gone back to the dear old Privet[1]. Yes, the same as was there before. After all, they said, it withstood so many winters, it stayed evergreen, and it never grew above 4-5 metres in height staying below the balconies of the first floor of the houses on the Corso, thus corresponding to all the required characteristics, so then why change?

It was already a part of Torricella, therefore ….. welcome back dear Privet.

Unfortunately, not all the tiles were laid on the level and some being raised have already caused many people to trip up.  The cemetery Chapel

 This news is several years old but many people have asked me to mention it. The chapel in the cemetery has been restored, the one in which the casket is laid before the final blessing by the priest. In particular, the altar and its furnishings have been restored. Several ladies headed by Germana Piccone took care of it all. Apart from painting the walls, putting in new oak benches for the relatives of the dead person to sit on and the wrought iron lamps, they have placed a magnificent silk painting, designed by Rosa Di Luzio, a Torricellan artist who lives in France, whilst an elderly 90-year old lady, Annina Di Legge (di papanarde), has embroidered the linen cloth that covers the altar.

 Famous Men from Torricella Peligna

 On 30^th July of this summer, the public of Torricella were presented with a book entitled “Famous Men from Torricella Peligna”. Salvatore Copertino had been saying for a very long time that he had created this work, but unfortunately, he lacked the funds to be able get it printed. Finally, with patronage from the Town Hall of Torricella Peligna and co-financing from the Maiella Verde, he was able to print it this year and to distribute it free of charge  to everyone interested – and if anyone wishes to have a copy (in Italian) they can obtain it from Elio Porreca’s tourist agency

 This book describes the lives of about thirty famous people from Torricella who lived from the end of the 1800’s until the present day; it has been lavishly provided with beautiful photographs and both Salvatore Copertino and his son Fabrizio carried out detailed historical research. 

They live in Chieti but originate in Torricella and often return to visit relatives and friends.

 Salvatore is an accomplished artistic photographer and there have been many photographic exhibitions of his works. He has also had a journalistic bent from an early age, publishing every now and again in a magazine called “Materials” “Materiali”.

Another “artistic” publication came out recently, edited by “Tracce” from Pescara (www.tracce.org), called “The flower of Poetry from Chieti” “Il fiore della poesia teatina” which juxtaposes some of Copertino’s beautiful photos with poems written by poets from Chieti.

The Monastery

 They had thought they’d be able to finish this summer, but it is going to need quite a bit more time. Maybe they’ll have the inauguration in the Spring. Don Giustino Rossi, the Benedictine monk who is carrying out restoration of his old family home, at Riga Tre Confini, to convert it into a Benedictine Monastery, never lets it get him down; last time I went to visit him he told me, “We are in the hands of Providence and you’ll see that somehow we shall be ready for the inauguration”.

 The walls, the roof, the attics and the dividing walls have all been finished and now they need to get on with the hydraulic plants, the plastering, the tiles and the fixtures. They need more money. Don Giustino estimates about 140,000 Euros are needed to complete it all.

 The other day he telephoned me to tell me that he’d received a wire transfer from Montevideo in Uruguay, but he did not know who had sent it and he really wishes to know so that he can thank them personally. We know that when this site began there were about 40 contacts from Uruguay but no-one has written in our guest book or contacted us.
