The first Literary Festival dedicated to John Fante: A Success!

- Gianni Materazzo

This year the traditional Festival Programme of small orchestras, bands, fireworks, etcetera, was totally restructured to provide a platform for an important project worthy of merit: the first Literary Festival dedicated to John Fante – and, given its success, it will probably become an annual recurrence.

It should be noted that this Italo-American author is Torricella’s greatest glory, if for nothing else than for the international level of his fame. We remember John, who was the son of Nicola Fante, a builder, who was born and lived in Torricella Peligna, from where he emigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 1900’s. Torricella and its inhabitants, therefore, needed dutifully to pay tribute to their illustrious “co-citizen” (compaesano). They did so by means of this Literary Festival dedicated entirely to him, entitled “My Father’s God” (Il Dio di mio padre).

The event took place over three days, the 4th, 5th and 6th of August and the conclusion was held on the 13th of the same month. During these days of intense activity there were debates, conferences, book launches and presentations by authors originating from Abruzzo, (amongst whom I was one), and by others, whose main characteristic was that they were followers of John Fante, who, as is known, has many fans throughout the world.

The hall of the Anthropological Museum, where the various meetings were held, was always filled by the public: students, youths who came from far afield, but especially Torricellans, many of whom, perhaps for the first time, discovered that they had such a famous co-citizen and also, perhaps for the first time, set about reading one of his novels.

At times during the Festival there were various speakers, University teachers of Literature, scholars and experts from the University of Abruzzo, from the United States and from other countries, all testifying to the high level of quality of this first Festival dedicated to this author.

The most lively interest and public participation, however, took place in the presence of two of John’s four children, Victoria and Jim, who came over from California to Torricella expressly for the Festival, as guests of honour. Torricellans and people from further away were able to talk with Jim and Victoria, who could testify directly about the author’s life, his character and his personality as a novelist. Moreover they were able to listen to episodes and anecdotes about John, the father of the family and a common man, at moments during his day to day life with his wife, children and friends.

Another evening of high quality was dedicated to a projection of the recent American film, “Ask the Dust”, from Fante’s distressing novel of the same name, which is one of his most significant works; the famous actor Colin Farrell stars in the film.

Most of the credit for the promotion and organisation of this first Festival goes to Giovanna Di Lello, as does the success achieved by the event thanks to her competence, enthusiasm and energy. Above all she is to be complimented on her love of the literary works of this author, about whom she has made an excellent documentary, which also was projected during one of the days of the Festival.

Another culminating point of the Festival was a performance by the famous singer, Vinicio Capossela, who despite being constrained by a rainy evening to perform in the hall of the Hotel Capè, improvised songs using words and phrases from John Fante’s novels to the accompaniment of a guitar.

Other important people who collaborated with Giovanna Di Lello included Fernando Carapella and Nicola di Capè, the latter being the proprietor of the Hotel & Restaurant of the same name. The event would never have taken place, nor have been such a resounding success, had it not been for the tireless work of this true professional, Doctor Di Lello, and of the Mayor, Graziano Zacchigna and his Council, who positively supported the project both with adequate financial assistance and with relative logistical support, thus displaying courage and foresight, not least because the event might have seemed, on paper, to have been a very narrow field culturally and thus elitist and not suited to the people of the locality. Instead, as proof that the choice was a winning one, the Torricellans participated in large numbers at each day’s events and displayed a lively interest and involvement.

The only sadness was that a few days before the Festival, several Councillors of the Majority Party unexpectedly and inexplicably resigned, causing the Administration to fall - thus preventing the first citizen and the other assessors from supporting any of the Festival with their presence and their authority in an official capacity.

Speaking with the resigning Mayor, I gathered from his words a comment full of bitterness about the incomprehensible affair, about his incredulity and delusion concerning the gesture of his Councillors which led to the fall of the Council. Personally, I send him my understanding and solidarity.
