The Village Pinewood to be Named after Porreca.
TORRICELLA PELIGNA.
The village’s Pinewood will be named after Antonio Porreca, hardware
merchant from Torricella, born 1880, died 1953. Elio Porreca, the Deputy
Mayor explains the reason for this: “In the early 1920’s our fellow
citizen had the idea to create a Pinewood on the highest part of the hill,
above the area known as “The Plains” (“Le Piane”) and he expended much
energy planting the pines, the firs and the thuyas (thujas or cedars or
arbour vitae)[1]. Since then, this green area has become the symbol of the
village. Furthermore, a road adjacent to the Pinewood will be named after
the Municipal Guard, Luigi Di Iorio, who was the faithful custodian of the
forest.” Within the year work will commence to repair the Monument to The
Fallen and to complete the staircase on its Southern side. The overall
cost will be 70 thousand Euros of which 25 thousand from the Region and 45
thousand from funds from the Commune (Town Hall). Another project
involving the Pinewood is the recovery and development of an already
existing sports complex, five-a-side football pitches and tennis courts,
and the building of a swimming pool with solarium and services. These
works will cost 154 thousand Euros of which 129 thousand from finance from
the Region and 25 thousand from a mortgage from the Town Hall. The Mayor,
Graziano Zacchigna, stated that “We place reliance on the great value to
the village of this green lung, which offers both fellow citizens and
tourists alike the possibility of replenishing their bodies and their
souls”.
