I Marciapiedi

 The Monastery

The Monastery roof was already finished last November and the paternal home of Don Giustini Rossi, the Benedictine who is a native of Torricella, seems transformed since we saw it last year when the restoration work was begun. As soon as the roof was completed a beautiful wrought iron cross was affixed to it, to identify the holy destiny of the building. In December drainage works around the walls were carried out on the upper (in relation to the mountain) side of the house to eliminate dampness. Now, however, we need to wait for good weather in order to start working again.

It is beautiful to see from the outside, but there are still many things lacking to make it habitable. I went to the old Nursery School, the house where Don Giustino has been living. Now whenever I go to Torricella I go to say hallo to him. He listed so many things that yet need to be done: the window and door frames, the dividing walls, the floors, the fixtures, the hydraulic system, electricity and heating, the bathrooms and so many other things.
Unfortunately a lot of money is still needed, he thinks about 100,000 Euros, and he doesn’t know where to get it, but he does not give up and says that for all those who have this initiative in their hearts, the time has come for them to make themselves known.
In the spring they will start working again and he hopes to have the inauguration in July. By which time one hopes that the Commune of Torricella will have fixed the tract of white road that leads to the Monastery. A little will suffice, it is only the last part of about 300 metres. Now it is totally impassable, so full of furrows and holes that one can only reach it by tractor.

December 2005:  The exterior restoration is finished and they have installed a wrought iron cross on the roof.

January 2007 - News of the Benedictine Monastery in Torricella

The Church Roof

A year has gone by since they had to close the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo because part of the roof above the left aisle had collapsed. Finally, after many problems with the economy and planning that eventually became acceptable to the Belle Arti, the roof has been rebuilt. Directed by Mario Piccirelli, the Engineer, and following the plans of Enzo D’Ambrosio, the Architect, the firm of Taddeo Donato has rebuilt the whole of the roof above the left aisle so it looks the same as it did before it collapsed, but using iron beams instead of wooden ones. A special method was used with the beams resting on cement stringcourses so that they don’t exert too much force on the stone structures. The beams support the planks of wood on which the tiles rest.. Now it only needs to have the apse covering rebuilt, in order to eliminate the damp behind the main altar, certainly in the spring with the good weather.

It seems, however, that so far no-one has received any payment, neither the Director of Works not even the firm. The money, € 70,000.00 promised by the Abruzzo Region, has still not arrived, although there have been assurances that it will soon reach the Parish’s account.
Meanwhile the Church is still closed.

The Pavements

In October work commenced to put the road surface of Corso Umberto I in order.
At first it seemed to be an acceptable inconvenience, but gradually as the work progressed with the entire road surface being dug up right down to the virgin earth, which at that part is very clayey, and with the excavations for drains for both water and sewers, the inconvenience became extremely annoying.

Many Torricellans were cross with the workers and the managers of the Province. “You cannot start work of this nature in October without serious risk of rain and snow”. In fact in November and December apart from the rain it snowed heavily twice, which increased the discomfort and slowed down the works. Finally, before Christmas, after having laid the underground sewers and water pipes and after having rebuilt the under layer of the road, the first layer of asphalt was putdown, which will be followed, once the pavements have been adjusted, by the “mat” layer. Thus Torricella is reborn in the hopes that all the inconveniences will have served to make it a more beautiful Torricella. Now we are waiting for March and the warmer days to fix the pavements. It will take another three months, there are about 2,100 square metres of pavement,

They think they will finish by June. They have to dig up the whole of the surface of both the pavements, repair the collecting conduits for white water on the eastern side (towards the sea), the drains on the western side, set in order all the connections from the houses to the main drains and then lay the new pavement.

One problem not yet solved is the choice of paving, it needs to be a slightly rough stone to avoid problems with ice and to resist freezing in winter. It seems likely that they will choose porphyry[1]. Francesca Piccoli, the architect director of the works, is studying the problem and agrees with this type of paving, possibly with patterns, and is toying with the regular shapes but is uncertain whether to use bricks or which shades of colours to use.
The part of the Corso which is governed by the Provincial Administration is that part which runs from the little side street called Via Orientale up to the “rue di signurielle” and from the De Stefanis curve up to just past the Penna Nera Bar. Therefore we are lacking the pavements outside the Piccoli laundry, the Grottino Bar, the Pharmacy and the part beyond the Penna Nera. If it stays like that it will certainly be an unfinished work. They are trying, however, by recovering the money owing from low-bid quotation prices, to get these parts done in such a way that the whole of the Corso will have the same paving.

Another problem will be the planting of trees along the Corso. At the present there is a type of tree which has proved to be resistant to Torrricella’s temperatures, a species of Holm oak[2]. Some have withered and have been replaced with other species of tree, but now, since they have to be dug up to resurface the pavements, they are thinking of replacing them completely with another species or else to integrate them with the same species of Holm oak. The latter seems to be the way of thinking of the Commune’s Administration. But there is another fact, some members of the Administration want to reduce the number of trees because, when the monthly fair (market) takes place, then the stalls could all go on the pavement, thus not affecting the traffic.

This idea, however, does not have general agreement, the present distance between the trees is commensurate with the Corso’s length and breadth, and this motive is not an important enough reason for changing the architectonic appearance of the Corso. The fair which takes place each month in Torricella, 12 days a year, is no longer as important as it was 20 – 30 years ago. Now people travel a lot and don’t need to wait for the fair to come to buy any particular products. For this reason, changing the aspect of the Corso in order better to organise the fair, seems to most people to be an exaggeration. Nothing has been decided yet, we are sure, however, that the best solution will be found to make Torricella ever more beautiful for many years to come.

The AVIS[3] Monument

On November 20th 2005, during a snowfall and in the freezing cold, the monument to donors was inaugurated. It is near the Town Hall in the area where there was a small garden with a fountain.

Since 2002 the directors of the local section of AVIS in Torricella wanted to carry out their idea of making a monument, a statue, a something, that would recall the civil undertaking of so many blood donors in Torricella. Finally on the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the local section of AVIS, which the late Don Ignazio Cocco so strongly wanted, the idea took shape. Now, in addition to the monument to the fallen and victims of the Civil War, Torricella also has a monument dedicated to blood donors. The project was thought up by Elio Garis, an artist from Cuneo, who is married to Rita Carapella from Torricella, and who comes back with pleasure to Torricella each summer. He also forged the statue in bronze that is the central body of the monument. The statue depicts a girl who metaphorically is life, that which the blood donor gives to others. On one side of the monument there is some writing that recalls Don Ignazio Cocco, the founder of the section.

Gabriele Piccone, current president of the AVIS section and promoter of the meeting, was highly satisfied, even though they are still at the starting point with regard to finances, for the money promised by the Abruzzo Region, €10,000 still has not arrived, although the finance has been approved, together with that for the Church roof – and Gabriele is certain that it will not be late in arriving.

The AVIS section, which bears Don Ignacio’s name, is certainly something of which Torricella can be proud. A village with so few inhabitants has 112 signed-up members, including founders, donors and collaborators, with 52 effective donors in 2005. Despite the bad weather, many people attended the meeting. There were representatives from 24 sections in the zone, a representative of the President of the Province of Chieti, Mr. Tamburrino the Provincial Assessor, the Bishop’s Vicar Don Domenico Scotti, the mayors of Torricella, Montenerodomo, Fallo and Quadri. During the meeting students from the middle and elementary schools received prizes for their entries in the II AVIS competition writing on the theme “Donation of blood, an act of love which saves lives”. Blood donors were also awarded medals and certificates according to how many donations they had given. It was a very good meeting.

Note: Elio Garis His career as an artist began in 1975: in 1984 he was chosen by J.C.Penney of New York to represent Italian craftsmen in the United States; in 1995 he took part in Artissima; in 1999 he held an exhibition of his sculptures, sand and glass at the Galleria Charlick[4] in London. Apart from sculptures and sand, he focuses on creating new proposals for furnishings and he intends to concentrate his efforts on the artistic use of glass.

Torricella Peligna is in First Place in the Category II Football Championships.

It has been many years since Torricella had a football team. They were always floating between the second and first amateur categories. This year, instead, they are playing really well and they are almost always in first place in the results (standings), even if until now, on the third day of the second round, they are in second place, just one point behind Guastameroli, but their centre forward Varrati is presently the chief high scorer.

Those who wish to follow the team’s results can link to

The Sports Association, Torricella Peligna 2005 – 2006

The Sports Society of Torricella Peligna has 20 members. The President is Giuseppe Teti di minnarelle and the Secretary is Claudio Antrilli di attelle. To administrate for a small sports society like Torricella’s is no easy task, here too it needs much passion and dedication and so we must always thank those who carry forward an initiative such as this. At this level of taking part in the sport it costs at least 25,000 Euros per year. Starting with the members, who pay 300 Euros each, the rest of the finance comes from the dinner at the start of the year, from the Carnivale holiday, from the Latin-American dance school, soon they will be opening a gymnasium, and there are sponsors, at least 10,000 Euros, plus regional and provincial contributions. Somehow they manage, moreover,

Claudio Antrilli told me, before the championships begin, they organise a small mini-championship with three teams and the takings are donated to the AVIS account – many of the members of the Sports Society are also blood donors.

TRANSLATOR’S NOTES:

[1] Porphyry is a very hard igneous rock consisting of large-grained crystals, such as feldspar or quartz, dispersed in a fine-grained feldspathic matrix or groundmass. The larger crystals are called phenocrysts. In its non-geologic, traditional use, the term "porphyry" refers to a purple-red stone valued for its appearance.
The term "porphyry" is from Latin and means "purple". Purple was the color of royalty, and the "Imperial Porphyry" was a purple igenous rock with large crystals of plagioclase. This rock was prized for various monuments and building projects in Rome and later. It came from quarries in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, from 600 million year old andesite of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. The quarry seems to have been worked intermittently between 29 and 335, after which it was lost to sight for many centuries. The scientific members of the French Expedition under Napoleon sought for it in vain, and it was only when the Eastern Desert was reopened for study under Muhammad Ali that the site was rediscovered by Bruton and Wilkinson in 1823.
Subsequently the name was given to igneous rocks with large crystals. Porphyry now refers to a texture of igneous rocks. Its chief characteristic is a large difference between the size of the tiny matrix crystals and other much larger crystals, called phenocrysts. Porphyries may be aphanites or phanerites, that is, the groundmass may have invisibly small crystals, like basalt, or the individual crystals of the groundmass may be easily distinguished with the eye, as in granite. Many types of igneous rocks may display porphyrytic texture.
Porphyry is a natural stone quarried and manufactured both in Italy and Argentina.
Porphyry is a volcanic rock formed from a slow cooling process of igneous material. The chemical composition of porphyry (over 70% silica, 14% aluminium, 8% alkali and small percentages of iron, calcium, and magnesium), its mineral composition (quartz, sanidine and plagioclase crystals with smaller amounts of biotite, and of pyroxenes in a vitreous paste) and its distinctive structure, as well as stratification, determine porphyry's technical characteristics (high compression breaking point, high resistance to chemical agents, high sliding and rolling friction) which make it one of the best materials for paving and facing.

Galleria Charlick – “is refreshingly different from other galleries.
Galleria Charlick represents a number of renowned contemporary photographers and sculptors. The setting is informal and, with the art displayed on different levels, it's almost like looking at pieces in a friend's home.
The Galleria is run by Piero Passet, whose infectious enthusiasm and passion for art encourage you to visit time and time again as there's always something new that you'd really like to own.
One of the differences between Galleria Charlick and other galleries is that you can drop in for a light lunch between 1200 and 1400, Mondays to Fridays, and savour the art as well as the tempting food prepared in the Galleria's sister shop John Charlick Foods.”
