La Festa alla Madonna delle Rose – Riflessioni

da Antonio Piccoli

Sabato 27 maggio 2006

Feast at the Madonna delle Rose – Reflections

by Antonio Piccoli

Saturday 27th May 2006.

The feast day of The Madonna delle Rose is being celebrated today in Torricella.

The Mass is at 11 o’clock in the morning and at 6 o’clock in the evening there will be the procession, followed later by a small orchestra playing light music to bring joy to those who live there and to those who will stay on to join in the picnic.

This annual celebration on the last Saturday in May is the one that for Torricellans is the most filled with tradition.

Just the thought that this feast will take place today at Torricella, makes a whole series of flashbacks return to one’s mind, with words, faces and songs.

How many memories.

The walk of about an hour with one’s family and friends on foot from Torricella to the Madonna delle Rose; the wicker basket filled with food; the Mass in the small Church so jam-packed that many people have to stand out in the churchyard; the spiritual and religious side with so many eyes gazing upon the painting of the Madonna with the child, united in prayer; the intimidating impression made by the sloping pillars of the choir loft, contrasting with the cheerfulness of the many-coloured ceramic tiles used here and there in repairs by Don Francesco, which he had also used to “adorn” the Church; the canopy in front of the entrance that made it so cool; choosing the place to spread out the picnic tablecloth, “lu mandile”, where we could eat the food our mothers had prepared with no-expenses spared; at 9 o’clock the small orchestra of Cesare De Cesaris would play on the small stage and sing “And for singing we needed Zi Nicola”, “E pe cantà ci vuleva Zi Nicola”; and finally the return to Torricella on foot, in the dark, along the white road that seemed even paler in the rays of moonlight and the first glow-worms (fireflies).

These memories are from the 1950’s and 1960’s. Who knows if it is still like that today? It doesn’t matter, the feast day of the Madonna delle Rose is a part of our roots and it is beautiful and always will be.
