Notizie – 14 marzo 2009

Antonio Piccoli

News – March 14, 2009

Antonio Piccoli

March 22-29 will be a week ablaze with activities, as though it were summertime.

On Sunday afternoon, the 22nd at 5pm, in the hall of the Anthropological Museum on Via Michele Persichetti 1, there will be a meeting for members of the Pro Loco.  They will discuss choosing new members of the executive board.  They will also plan events to accompany the John Fante Literary Festival, August 21-23.  They have thought about putting on a series of concerts of popular music at the sports field.  They might even get Francesco De Gregori to perform!  Then they will also discuss the ArteMusicaGusto (ArtMusicFlavor) Festival on July 24-25 and the “notte bianca” (festivities all night till dawn) on July 26.  They have various musical groups planned for those days, including “I Bottari” (already confirmed), “Banda Barò” and other emerging young groups.

There will certainly be plenty to talk about.

On the 25th there will be a day dedicated to the family Ciufielle.  As has already been announced, descendants of the blacksmith Fedele Porreca, Zi Fiele di ciufielle, lu firrare (“the blacksmith” in dialect), will congregate in Torricella from various parts of the world:  Argentina, the US, Rome and Macerata.  On the morning of the 25th they will get together.  Then at noon a mass will be celebrated in homage of their ancestors.  Then, they will dine at the Capè Restaurant and savor some of our local delicacies.

The Mayor Tiziano Teti and the President of the Pro Loco Antoino Di Fabrizio will welcome (or welcome back) the guests.  They have also organized a guided tour of the town, the local area, Juvanum and Roccascalegna with assistance from young people that speak English.

On Saturday the 28th the new Pro Loco center in the former nursery school will be inaugurated.  This is going to be another day ablaze with activity.  In the afternoon there will be the inauguration with a dedication to Albert Porreca, who sadly passed away.  Al’s wife and grown children are arriving from the US to attend the event as is Dan Aspromonte, the other co-founder of the TorricellaPeligna.com website.  At 9:30pm in the ONARMO, there will be a concert of classical music put on by the Vincent Persichetti Music Association, with music of Beethoven, Persichetti and others.

Then in April…….

Then on the afternoon of April 9th, Holy Thursday, in the new Pro Loco center, there will be an important conference discussing tourism in the Sangro-Aventino area and the development of sources of compact, renewable energy such as wind power, solar panels and photovoltaic panels.  They will discuss the idea of creating a sort of consortium of the surrounding towns to construct a small plant that would supply the electrical needs of the area.

This idea came out of discussions that took place on the Yahoo and Facebook groups dedicated to Torricella Peligna.  In just a few days already around 50 people from various towns in the area have said they will attend.

On the subject of Facebook, on April 9th at the Capè Restaurant, there will be a dinner/meeting of the Facebook group “Farfalle Maiella e un Litro di Vino al Capè” (“Butterly-shaped pasta prepared Maiella style and a Liter of Wine at the Capè Restaurant”).  There will also be live music.  Here’s the flyer:

On April 19th, on “Clean Italy Day” (“Puliamo L’Italia”), as designated by the Italian Environmental League (Lega Ambiente), the Pro Loco of Torricella has organized a day entitled “Clean the Historic Center of Torricella” (“Puliamo il centro storico”).  This will be a good opportunity to clean the Coste neighborhood in time for the summer events.  A clean-up day was organized in the same area last year, which then became the center stage for the event of the year, ArteMusicaGusto (ArtMusicFlavour).

As a little “gift” to go along with this news, I am attaching the following photo from the 1960s provided by Enzo Di Martino.
