March 2009 News

Sunday – March 1  - There was a parade with the carnival floats created by the Pro Loco.  The parade had to be cancelled the week beforehand because of snow.  Finally, there was a bit of good weather, and so out came the floats.  The young people in town had spent all of February passionately preparing the floats; so, it would have been a shame not to show them off.  There were four floats. They depicted:  the Adams Family, a Sangritana bus in trouble, life on a farm, and an operating room. Other participants were simply disguised in masks and costumes.  The band from Gessopalena accompanied the floats with lively marches up and down the town.

The day beforehand there was a parade in Montenerodomo, and our floats participated in that event as well.

Then, on Sunday evening everyone was invited to the museum hall where the Pro Loco offered sandwiches, wine and dancing until late.  The day was indeed very festive and enjoyed by all.

Sunday – March 8 – International Women’s Day – In the Senior Center (Centro Anziani) there will be a celebration with a full lunch at noon and dancing the afternoon and evening until late.

In a big way the Senior Center has once again become very active.  The manager/president/organizer/treasurer of the Center is tireless Giose Di Iorio together with Katrin Persichetti.  The mayor gave him the “keys” to the Center.  He is a highly regarded, proactive individual who has gained the respect of the elderly members of the community.  For the past two months seniors have had their days filled with activities organized by the Center:  two mornings a week exercise, one day embroidery lessons, tombola (similar to Bingo) on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and Saturday dancing.  These are wonderful moments of entertainment and socialization for the seniors of Torricella.

Wednesday – March 25 – It will certainly be a very special day.  There will be a reunion of the “ciufielle” branch of the Porreca family.  Relatives are coming from Argentina (Alberto Porreca, president of the Abruzzese Club of Tandil, e suo figlio Adrian), from the US and from Italy.  They will all meet in Torricella on March 25th. There will be more than 20 participants.  They will arrive the day beforehand, the 24th, and most will leave on the 26th.  They also plan a visit to the Dal Verde pasta factory in Fara San Martino.  On the 25th Father Peppino will celebrate a mass of homage for the family members.  The progenitor of this family was Fedele Porreca, “Zi Fidele di ciufielle”, blacksmith of Torricella for over 40 years, in the first part of the last century.  On our website there is a poem by Roberto Porreca dedicated to the old blacksmith, and a nice photo of Fedele di ciufielle when he was younger.  There is also the story of Pasquale Porreca, one of his sons that left for Argentina when he was only 20 years old.

Members of the Pro Loco and the town administration will welcome the group.  The Pro Loco will take them on a guided tour of historical and characteristic areas of the town.  They will also take them to the archeological museum to see certain artifacts and the famous “mummy”, and they will take them to the Juvanum archeological site.

Saturday – March 28 - On the 28th of March there will be the inauguration of the new site of the Pro Loco inside the old Porreca Nursery School on Via Peligna.  Besides this, there will be a ceremony dedicating the Pro Loco to Albert Porreca, the creator of “our” website, who is sadly no longer with us. His wife Lee and his 3 sons and daughter are coming from the US for the ceremony along with Dan Aspromonte, the co-creator of the website, and winner with Al of the 2007 “Torricellan in the World” award.

In the afternoon there will be the dedication ceremony.  Then, after dinner at 9:30pm, there will be a concert of classical music organized by the Vincent Persichetti Music Association

The association is headquartered in both Falconara Marittima and Torricella Peligna, and it is dedicated to this great American musician of Torricellan origin.  The concert will consist of piano solos of Brahms, Beethoven and Persichetti, and a second part with duets of chamber music and film scores – certainly an event not to be missed.

Thursday – April 9 – During Easter week there will most likely be a meeting of the Facebook group Un litro di vino e farfalle maiella al Capè (“A liter of wine and Maiella butterfly pasta at the Capè Hotel Restaurant”).  During that gathering, the Facebook group Per il turismo nel Sangro-Aventino (“On behalf of tourism in the Sangro-Aventino Territory”) will organize a conference in the new headquarters of the Pro Loco on “Tourism in the Sangro-Aventino Territory and the Promotion of Renewable Energy”.  The idea of a conference came out of discussions that have taken place on the Torricella Yahoo Group on energy issues, self-sufficiency and the construction of a small plant to harness the power of solar, wind and light.

Saturday – April 25 - Coinciding with the Feast of the Liberation, there will be a commemoration of the Sant’Agata Massacre, retracing the journey from the Santa Giusta hamlet to the Sant’Agata farmhouse.

Friday & Saturday, July 24 & 25 – This year the fantastic ArteMusica&Gusto (ArtMusic&Flavor) Festival will take place on July 24th and 25th, a Friday and Saturday.  It is 90% sure the famous Florentine rock and folk group Bandabardò will perform.  A Facebook group has been created called ArteMusica&Gusto, where you can find the latest news on this event, and in just a few weeks 300 members have already signed up.
