Una settimana importante

La settimana scorsa si era già annunciata piena di avvenimenti. Si sapeva.
A metà settimana il ritorno di “chisse di Ciufielle”; a fine settimana l’inaugurazione della nuova sede della pro loco, con i parenti di Al Porreca; la sera il concerto di musica classica delle Serpilli Sister e la domenica la probabile vittoria del campionato di calcio da parte del Torricella.
Lo sapevamo e così è andata, anzi, molto meglio del previsto.
Della vittoria del Torricella già vi ho dato la notizia domenica sera, appena sono tornato da Torricella. Era troppo importante e entusiasmante la notizia.
Adesso, con un po’ di calma vi racconto degli altri avvenimenti.

Chisse di Ciufielle

A metà settimana, come già sapete, c’era stato il ritorno a Torricella dei Porreca della famiglia di Ciufielle. Li ha accolti una giornata stupenda, un limpido cielo azzurro con un caldo finalmente primaverile. Anche il cielo ha voluto dare la sua benedizione. In molti hanno pensato, ed in primo luogo il sindaco, che questo “ritorno alle radici”, messo in pratica da questa famiglia, non sia stata una semplice visita ma un apripista per tanti ritorni nel paese di origine.
Saranno le notizie del paese che arrivano attraverso il sito? Sarà un’altra aria che tira?
Non lo sappiamo.
Saranno seguite da altre famiglie? Da altri ritorni? Magari! Staremo a vedere.
Intanto registriamo che gli organizzatori hanno sentito il desiderio di convocare per il 23 di marzo quanti dei discendenti della famiglia con lo stesso soprannome volevano riabbracciarsi, partecipare alla celebrazione di una messa a suffragio dei defunti della famiglia e visitare il paese che non avevano mai visto e che aveva dato i natali al nonno. Erano in ventotto. Sono arrivati 2 dall’Argentina, 10 dagli Stati Uniti, ed altri da diverse parti dell’Italia. Un incontro senza dubbio emozionante.
Uno degli organizzatori di questa iniziativa è stato Adrian Porreca, nipote di Pasquale, emigrante degli anni 20, e figlio di Alberto, che da molto tempo è in contatto con noi del sito e da me riceve abitualmente le notizie di Torricella.
La cosa carina è che Adrian e Alberto hanno sentito il desiderio di portare un regalo per la nostra comunità e lo hanno donato al nostro sindaco. Come un ambasciatore che va in visita in un altro stato oppure come un parente che torna dopo tanto tempo.
Alberto ha una fonderia a Tandil in Argentina, e nella sua azienda ha costruito uno stampo per riprodurre in ferro la statua di epoca pre romana “Il guerriero di Capestrano”. Bisogna dire che a Tandil vi è un’associazione di abruzzesi e il simbolo di questa associazione è appunto il guerriero con il largo cappello.
Ne ha portati in Italia due riproduzioni, una per Torricella da dare al sindaco ed una per il museo di Chieti, dove si trova l’originale, a cui il giorno seguente sono andati in visita.
Un pensiero gentile a cui il sindaco ha ricambiato offrendo in dono il libro sugli uomini illustri di Torricella.
Certo sarebbe bello che le tante famiglie torricellane prendessero esempio da questa iniziativa e una per volta ritornassero a Torricella .
Quanti soprannomi, quante famiglie. Sul sito ne abbiamo catalogati ben 246.
Penso alla mia famiglia, a “chisse di maone”. Tempo fa mi misi a sistemare l’albero genealogico partendo dal padre di mio nonno Carmine, che si chiamava appunto Antonio Piccoli, come me. Passando per tre generazioni arrivai alla mia e contai ben 72 cugini in seconda. Qualcuno sta a Torricella, altri in Italia ma la maggior parte all’estero. Certo sarebbe bello ma molto difficile metterli tutti insieme.

L’inaugurazione della nuova sede e la dedica ad Al Porreca

La preparazione della sede era iniziata qualche giorno prima, di tutta fretta. Bisognava togliere quello che c’era, ripulirla e arredarla. Hanno lavorato anche di notte, una decina di ragazzi con a capo Camillo Antrilli di cianghette. Hanno scartavetrato, dato due mani, messo le cornici, imbiancato il tetto, attaccato i quadri ed infine, mezz’ora prima, sul filo di lana, la nuova sede brillava di un bel colore caldo arancio, molto accogliente.
Questa della destinazione delle aule del vecchio asilo Porreca era diventato un caso politico. Per più di tre anni c’era stato Don Giustino Rossi, ma dopo l’inaugurazione e il trasloco al Monastero di Tre Confini, sia la Pro loco che l’associazione musicale “Lalla mi fa un sol” chiedevano insistentemente al sindaco di avere una sala nella vecchia struttura al centro di Torricella per organizzare le proprie iniziative. Ma era difficile prendere una decisione e sistemare tutti quelli che reclamavano un posticino. A gennaio, in un consiglio comunale, è stata presa la decisione, abbastanza condivisa, per cui si dava in comodato d’uso gratuito l’intera struttura alle due associazioni e poi a Don Giustino ed al Parroco Don Peppino. La sala grande di destra del pian terreno alla Pro Loco, le due camerette a sinistra a Don Giustino per le riunioni religiose settimanali, la cucina in uso comune, il piano di sopra a Don Peppino per il catechismo, mentre la sala di sotto all’Associazione musicale. Tutti contenti e tutti al lavoro.
E finalmente il 28 di marzo si è insediata anche la Pro Loco .
Già la mattina era uscito un articolo su quotidiano IL CENTRO a firma di Walter Teti che con dovizia di particolari e con il suo inconfondibile stile aveva annunciato la cerimonia e il concerto serale mettendo in relazione la figura di Al Porreca a quella di un grande musicista Vincent Persichetti, anche lui originario di Torricella.
Alle cinque del pomeriggio la sede era già piena. In prima fila c’erano la moglie di Albert, Lee, i quattro figli Michelle, Michel, Jeffrey e Andy, venuti dal New Jersey proprio per questa cerimonia. Poi c’era Dan Aspromonte, l’amico fraterno con cui ha ideato e costruito il sito, anche lui venuto espressamente dalla California.
Ha preso la parola il presidente Antonio Di Fabrizio di tup, che, dopo aver dato il benvenuto a quanti erano in sala ed aver ringraziato i ragazzi che avevano lavorato sino a poco prima per la preparazione della sede, ha “scoperto” una bella immagine di Albert, elaborata dalla maestria di un ragazzo aderente alla Pro Loco, Luca Franceschini, suscitando molti consensi e molta commozione, anche da parte dei famigliari. Antonio ha ripercorso il primo anno associativo, ha elencato i progetti per la prossima estate e spiegato le motivazioni per una intitolazione così importante.
Ha raccontato di quanti, senza nessun scopo di lucro, si sono uniti sacrificando il tempo libero per creare dal niente iniziative molto belle, coinvolgenti e importanti. Ha sottolineato che il fine della Pro Loco è quello della promozione turistica ma anche di combattere lo spopolamento dei piccoli centri montani. Ha parlato poi di Albert del suo amore per le proprie radici e con quale passione ha lavorato per ricostruirne la storia genealogica del paese. L’associazione ha scelto questo nome perché il lavoro fatto da Albert ha reso i torricellani oltre oceano e oltre appenino tutti più vicini. E l’opera di volontariato dei ragazzi della Pro Loco è identica a quella di Albert per la costruzione del sito, uno strumento utile a tutti e unico punto di riferimento per i torricellani sparsi per il mondo. E poi Albert Porreca, con il suo nome americano ed il cognome abruzzese, ci rende tutti cittadini universali, felici di essere nati, non a Torricella ma semplicemente sulla Terra.
Ha poi enunciato le iniziative estive quali Arte Musica e Gusto del 24 e 25 luglio e il festival letterario John Fante del 21-23 di agosto per cui si è pensato di organizzare un mega concerto al campo sportivo da 5000 persone. Infine ha chiesto il sostegno fattivo e morale di tutti affinché si attivi questo importante processo di trasformazione culturale tanto caro a Albert Porreca. Un lungo e caloroso applauso ha sottolineato l’approvazione dei presenti ed ha preso quindi la parola un visibilmente commosso Dan Aspromonte.

Anche lui si era appuntato qualcosa ma prendendo spunto dal discorso precedente ha voluto raccontare in che modo Albert venne a conoscenza della sua origine torricellana. Era il 1998, si trovava in una riunione di lavoro e per caso sentì che altre persone facevano di cognome Porreca. Seppe poi che erano cugini e che provenivano dall’Abruzzo, precisamente da un piccolo paese chiamato Torricella Peligna. Fino ad allora, già ultrasessantenne, non aveva mai sentito parlare di Torricella anche se suo padre era torricellano e sua madre era della provincia di Pescara. Come molti italiani che arrivavano in America volevano dimenticare al piu presto il luogo di provenienza, si cancellava una vita di miseria e si voleva entrare il più presto possibile in una vita dignitosa, diventare americani. Una volta saputo che proveniva da Torricella, Albert si dedicò alla ricerca di parenti, si procurò un elenco telefonico e gli indirizzi di tutti quelli che facevano di cognome Porreca e scrisse ben 200 lettere, chiedendo, in inglese, se sapevano qualcosa dei suoi parenti. Purtroppo nessuno gli rispose. Ma non si perse d’animo e presto arrivò a Torricella nel 1999 dove con l’aiuto di Giovanna e Marziale Di Marino, che sanno l’inglese, cominciò la ricerca e seppe che apparteneva a “chisse di scipp” e che una sua cugina prossima era Italina Croce, in quegli anni ancora in vita.
Nel 2003 ci fu l’incontro con Dan che conobbe via Internet perché voleva creare un sito come quello di Lettopalena. E da una piccola idea è venuto fuori una cosa così grande.
Per quasi 5 anni è stato il suo lavoro quotidiano.
Racconta ancora Dan che Albert aveva un cartello nel suo ufficio che diceva Life is Beautiful, la vita è bella e la Pro loco rispecchia questo sentimento perché vuole rendere la vita bella ai torricellani.
Pochi giorni prima di morire arrivarono le “notizie” da Torricella con un resoconto di tutte le iniziative estive. La figlia Michelle gliele lesse, lui si mise a piangere e volle che la figlia gliele rileggesse un’altra volta, ma piano piano. Forse sentiva che era l’ultima volta. Quando morì arrivarono tantissime condoglianze dal Forum e ricorda quella in cui si diceva che senza la sua passione, la sua bontà il suo amore per Torricella non sarebbe nato il sito e tanti torricellani sparsi per il mondo non si sarebbero ritrovati, non ci sarebbe stato questo desiderio di collaborazione, non sarebbe nato il forum e forse la nuova linfa che pervade oggi Torricella come la costituzione della Pro Loco è merito suo.
Le storie di Al e della Pro loco hanno anche un senso di passaggio di mano. La pro loco nasce a marzo e Al entra in ospedale ad Aprile. L’ultima cosa che Al mise sul sito fu il messaggio di Antonio Di Fabrizio che annunciava la nascita della Pro Loco. Infine Dan ringrazia la Pro Loco per aver scelto come nome quello di Al Porreca, che se fosse presente abbraccerebbe tutti in modo calorosissimo. Poi ha preso la parola il figlio Michael che dice di essere molto onorato per questo riconoscimento. Racconta che il padre venne a Torricella 10 anni fa, a gennaio, ed il prete gli disse che le persone non avrebbero capito il senso della sua ricerca, ma lui non gli diede ascolto perché era entusiasta di questa nuova città ritrovata, era appassionato di questa gente, di questa nuova famiglia. Confessa che lui è venuto a Torricella per far sentire al padre che anche lui era presente nel momento che la comunità torricellana lo avrebbe onorato.

Anche l’altro figlio Andy, ha voluto dire qualcosa per ringraziare dell’onore che Torricella ha riservato a suo padre e dice: “Voi sapete come è stato influenzato da Torricella e voglio farvi sapere che ha influenzato anche me. Mio padre era molto intelligente e estremamente generoso, siccome era intelligente era convinto di non sapere tutto ma io sapevo che sapeva tutto, effettivamente però gli mancava questo tassello e nel momento che ha scoperto l’esistenza di Torricella l’ha portato fino in fondo. Il suo sogno era quello di aggregare le persone e sento che ora vi ringrazia e vi saluta.

Infine il sindaco Tiziano Teti :
“Io mi complimento per il discorso di Antonio e con quello di Dan. A volte faccio fatica a pensare che la Pro loco è nata solo da un anno, per tutte le iniziative che ha organizzato. Nelle prime riunioni era palpabile che c’era qualcosa dentro tutti noi, c’era l’idea che volevamo dare corpo a questa rinascita, a questa voglia di risocializzare, questa voglia di tenere unito il paese, questa voglia di creare. Spesso si dice che a Torricella non si può fare niente, mentre ora si riscontra che si possono fare tante cose. Bisogna avere tanta buona volontà. Albert è stato un simbolo di unione, noi lo abbiamo eletto primo Torricellano nel Mondo e per questo mi piace che sia stata dedicata la sede a lui anche perché noi a Torricella siamo rimasti in pochi e quindi è molto importante che fra quelli che vivono a Torricella e quelli che vivono nel mondo si ristabiliscano dei contatti.

Dopo i discorsi ci sono stati applausi ed abbracci fra i figli e la moglie di Al e i convenuti si è passati ad un gustoso rinfresco di dolcetti, salumi, panini imbottiti e spumanti offerto e organizzato dalle impagabili signore della Pro Loco.

I parenti di Al hanno portato con loro dall’America una boccettina con le ceneri di Al. La mattina erano stati in contrada Stazzo cavallo, la contrada nativa del nonno di Albert, ed avevano tirato in aria sopra il casolare dirotto della famiglia un po’ delle ceneri, poi sono andati al cimitero e poi sul Colle dell’Irco, facendo la stessa cosa. Semplicemente commovente.

Alle 21,30 dopo una cenetta al ristorante Capè con i ragazzi delle Pro loco e la famiglia di Al, siamo andati all’Onarmo dove c’era ad attenderci l’Associazione Vincent Persichetti per il concerto di musica classica.
La sala era già piena. Sul palco un lucidissimo pianoforte a coda, un microfono ed un leggio. Organizzazione perfetta. Alle dieci tutti in silenzio, si inizia. La presidente dell’Associazione musicale Rosanna Persichetti, dopo aver ricordato che la serata è in onore di Albert Porreca ed ad agosto ci sarà la vera e propria inaugurazione della sede torricellana dell’Associazione, introduce il duo di chitarra e pianoforte, Caterina e Roberta Serpilli, sue figlie, studentesse del Conservatorio G. Rossini di Pesaro, Caterina (23 anni) all’8° anno di chitarra classica e Roberta (19 anni) al 7° anno di pianoforte.
Inizia Caterina con degli assoli di chitarra, mettendo in mostra grande tecnica. C’è da dire che sono stati molto interessanti le sue introduzioni per ogni pezzo che andavano a proporre, spiegando il metodo di lettura dei brani, l’autore e l’epoca di composizione. Dopo l’intervallo ci sono stati i duetti con chitarra e pianoforte, raggiungendo il totale gradimento del pubblico quando hanno proposto alcuni brani conosciuti come Moon River di Henry Mancini, Libertango di Astor Piazzolla e La vita è bella di N. Piovani. Ed il pubblico ha talmente gradito che ha richiesto per due volte ancora La vita è bella e Libertango.
Le ragazze erano contentissime sia per i tanti applausi e sia perché non immaginavano di trovare un pubblico attento e compito che stava perfettamente ai tempi di chiusura dei brani e senza nessun fruscio durante la loro esibizione.
Anche la presidente Rosanna era soddisfatta per il calore e la partecipazione del pubblico. Fra l’altro alla fine del concerto ci ha annunciato che la prossima estate per la inaugurazione della sede torricellana presenterà Vincent Persichetti con delle serate speciali anche con altri musicisti.
E’ stata veramente una bella serata, tanto che in molti sono rimasti per almeno un’altra ora a commentare e congratularsi con le ragazze.
Il giorno dopo, prima di ripartire, Caterina mi ha regalato un suo CD, dove ci sono 13 esibizioni di lei alla chitarra e Cecilia Sanchini al flauto, un CD live registrato il 21 dicembre 2008 nella Chiesa dell’Annunziata a Pesaro.
Devo dire che è una settimana che in macchina sento solo quel CD. E’ rilassante. Una scoperta. Senza dubbio un bel modo per affrontare il traffico di Roma.

Altre brevi notizie :

Domenica ci sono state le Nozze d’oro di Antonio Natale e Concetta Coladonato. 50 anni fa il matrimonio era stato celebrato da Don Giovanni Riva, l’indimenticabile parroco di Fallascoso. A loro va le congratulazioni e gli auguri di tutta la comunità torricellana.

Monastero Tre Confini. Ad un anno dall’inaugurazione, giovedì 9 di luglio, in occasione della ricorrenza di San Giovanni Guadalberto, fondatore della comunità benedettina di Vallombrosa e protettore della Guardia forestale, ci sarà la festa al Monastero di Tre Confini. Interverranno sia il comando territoriale della Guardia forestale, sia il Vescovo di Chieti, S.E. Bruno Forte . Mentre il 20 e 21 di giugno ci saranno degli incontri di riflessione e di preghiera della durata di due giorni. E’ in libreria l’ultimo lavoro di Alessandro Teti, Il Salone, Un romanzo ambientato in Abruzzo, fra Lanciano e Torricella, denso di ricordi della propria adolescenza. E come dice Ruggeri in prefazione, Alessandro “dimostra di non aver mai tradito la sua terra d’origine verso la quale ha sempre nutrito un grande amore”. Alessandro, grande amico d’infanzia, con cui abbiamo vissuto momenti di allegria e di impegno quando ventenni, negli anni 1969-1974, insieme a Walter e Rodolfo Teti redigevamo “La Rondine”, vive oggi a Legnano (MI).

Paolo Tetiviola, di 33 anni, nativo di Bomba ma a Torricella da 11 anni, è il nuovo coordinatore AVIS dei giovani della Provincia di Chieti. A lui vanno le nostre congratulazioni

An Important Week

It had already been announced that last week was going to be full of events. Everyone knew about these:
Halfway through the week the return of the "chisse di Ciufelle" family; at the end of the week the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Proloco, with members of Al Porreca's family; that evening was the concert of classical music by the Serpelli Sisters and on the Sunday a probable victory in the football championship by Torricella's team.
We knew about it in advance and that's how it went, moreover, much better than predicted.
I already gave you the news about Torricella's victory last Sunday evening, as soon as I got home from Torricella. It was too important and exciting an item of news to miss.
Now, with a little more calmness, I shall tell you about the other events.

Chisse di Ciufielle

As you know, halfway through the week, Porrecas from the Ciufelle family came back to Torricella. Stupendous weather welcomed them, a clear blue sky with finally a springtime warmth in the air. Even the heavens wanted to bless them. Many people, foremost the Mayor, had thought that the "return to their roots" by this Argentinean family, was more than just a simple visit, rather the forerunner of many people returning to their place of origin.
Might it be due to news of the village reaching them via the website? Maybe a different wind is blowing?
We don't know the cause.
Will they be followed by other families? By other people coming back? Let's hope so!!! We'll have to wait and see.
In the meanwhile, let us note that the son and grandson of a man who emigrated in the 1920's, Pasquale Porreca, felt a desire to gather together on the 23rd of March, as many descendents of his family with the same surname as wanted to see each other again, to participate in the celebration of a Mass for the members of the family who had died and to visit the village they had never seen but which had given birth to their ancestor. They came from Argentina, the United States, from Rome and from Macerata. This was certainly an emotional meeting.
The organiser of this event was Adrian Porreca, Pasquale's great-grandson and son of Albert, who for a long time has been in contact with the website and to whom I regularly send news about Torricella.
The nice thing is that Adrian and Alberto wanted to bring a gift to our community, which they presented to our Mayor, like an Ambassador visiting another country or like a relative who comes home after a very long time.
Alberto has a foundry at Tandil in Argentina, and he made a mould at his firm to reproduce in iron, the pre-Roman statue called "The Warrior of Capestrano".
In Tandil there is an Abruzzo Association and its symbol is this very warrior with the large hat.
Alberto brought two of these reproductions with him to Italy, one to give to the Mayor for Torricella and the other to give to the Museum of Chieti, where the original is housed, and which they went to visit the following day.
This was a very kind gesture, which courtesy the Mayor repaid by giving them a copy of the book of Illustrious Men of Torricella (uomini illustri di Torricella).
How lovely it would be if the many Torricellan families were to follow the example of this initiative, and come back one at a time to Torricella.
There are so many nicknames and so many families. On the website we have a good 246 of them.
I am thinking about my family, "chisse di maone". Some time ago I set about organising my own family tree, starting with Antonio Piccoli, my grandfather, Carmine's father. Going down three generations I arrived at mine and I found 72 second cousins. Some live in Torricella, some elsewhere in Italy, but most live abroad. I think it would be very difficult to get them all to come together.

Inauguration of the new Proloco Headquarters and its dedication to Albert Porreca

In great haste, the headquarters was made ready a few days before its opening. Everything that was there had to be removed, then they had to clean it and furnish it. A dozen young people, headed by Camillo Antrilli, di cianghette, worked at it day and night. They sandpapered, put up cornices, painted the ceiling white, hung up pictures, and just half an hour before the opening, the new headquarters sparkling in a warm orange colour, looked most welcoming.
Usage of the old Porreca Nursery School had become a political problem. For over three years, Don Giustino Rossi had been established there, but, after the Monastery at Tre Confini was opened he moved out. Then both Proloco and the Musical Society "Lalla mi fa sol" requested that the Mayor should give them room in this old building in the centre of Torricella where they could organise their activities. It became very difficult to come to a decision as to how to sort out which of the many people requesting a place there should be given room. In January, at a meeting of the Town Council, a fairly unanimous decision was reached, to entrust the entire building for free use by both societies and also by Don Giustino and by the Parish Priest, Don Peppino. The large ground floor room on the right is for Proloco, the two rooms on the left are for Don Giustino to use for weekly religious meetings, the kitchen is for communal use by all, the upper floor is for Don Peppino to use for Catechism classes and the lower room is for the Musical Society. Thus everyone is happy and they are all working there now.
Finally it was March 28th and Proloco also took up their place there.
That morning an article appeared in the daily newspaper IL CENTRO, written by Walter Teti, with a wealth of details in his unmistakeable style, announcing the ceremony and the evening concert, and describing both Albert Porreca and Vincent Persichetti, the great musician, who also originated from Torricella.
At five o'clock in the afternoon, the room was already full. In the front row were Lee, Albert's widow, together with their four children, Michelle, Michael, Jeffrey and Andy, who had come from New Jersey especially for this ceremony. Dan Aspromonte, the brotherly friend was also ther, with whom Albert had thought up and built the website; Dan too had come on purpose, from California.
The president, Antonio Di Fabrizio, di Tup, took the floor and after welcoming everyone present and having thanked the young people who had been working so hard to prepare the place until just moments before, he "discovered" a lovely image of Albert, that had been prepared skilfully by one of the boys belonging to Proloco, Luca Franceschini, which gave rise to great approval and much emotion, especially from the family members. Antonio gave an account of the Society's first year, listed the projects for the coming summer and explained the reasons for giving such an important name to the Society.
He explained that many people, without any thoughts of financial gain, had joined together, sacrificing their free time, in order to create from nothing many really nice, important activities. He stressed that the aim of Proloco is to promote tourism and also to combat depopulation of small mountain centres. Then he talked about Albert, his love for his roots and the passion with which he had worked to reconstruct the genealogical history of the village. The Society chose Albert's name because the work he carried out has brought all Torricellans closer together, whether from beyond the Apennines, or from over the Oceans. The voluntary work carried out by the young people of Proloco is identical to that of Albert when building the website, an instrument useful for everyone, a unique point of reference for Torricellans spread throughout the world. Albert Porreca, with his American name and his Abruzzan surname, makes us all universal citizens, happy to have been born, not at Torricella, but simply on this Earth.
Then he outlined this summer's activities such as "Arte, Musica e Gusto" (Art, Music and Taste) from 24th to 25th July and the Literary Festival John Fante from 21st to 23rd August, for which they have thought of organising a mega concert at the Sports Field for 5,000 people. Finally, he asked for support, both in doing and morally, in order that this important process of cultural transformation, so dear to Albert Porreca, might be activated. There was long and warm applause which confirmed the approval of all present and then Dan Aspromonte, visibly moved, took the floor.

He too was focused and taking his cue from the previous speech, he chose to talk about how Albert had come to learn of his Torricellan origins. In 1998, Albert was at a works reunion, when by chance he heard other people having the surname Porreca. He learned that they were cousins of his and that they had come from Abruzzo, from a small village called Torricella Peligna. Until that moment, the over sixty-year-old, had never before heard of Torricella, even though his father was a Torricellan and his mother came from the province of Pescara. Like many Americans who arrived in America, the family had wanted to forget about their place of origin as soon as possible, to block out a life of poverty, in the hopes of acquiring a more dignified life, by becoming American. Once he knew that he had originated in Torricella, Albert dedicated himself to searching for his relatives; he obtained a telephone directory and wrote letters to everybody with the surname Porreca, over 200 people, asking, in English, if they knew anything about his relatives. Sadly nobody replied. But he did not lose heart and soon afterwards, in 1999, he went to Torricella where, with help from Giovanna and Marziale Di Marino, who could both speak English, he began his researches. He discovered that he belonged to the "chisse di scipp" family and that he had a close cousin, called Italina Croce, who at that time was still alive...
In 2003, he met Dan through the Internet because he wanted to create a website similar to that of Lettopalena. From this small idea something really large began to emerge.
For four years he made this his daily work.
Dan told how Albert had a notice in his office which said "Life is Beautiful" and the Proloco reflects this sentiment because its aim is to make life beautiful for Torricellans.
A few days before his death, he received the "news" from Torricella with a summary of all the activities for that summer. When his daughter Michelle read it out to him, he started to cry and begged his daughter to read it to him again, but more slowly. Perhaps he felt that it would be for the last time. After he died, many people from the Forum sent their condolences, recalling that without his passion, his goodness, his love for Torricella, the website would never have been born and so many Torricellans throughout the world would never have found each other again, this desire to work with each other would not have emerged, the forum would not have been formed and maybe the new blood that now pervades Torricella today in the formation of the Proloco is also thanks to Albert.
In a sense, Al's story and that of Proloco pass from one hand to another. Proloco was born in March and Al went into hospital in April. The last thing that Al put on the website was the message from Antonio Di Fabrizio announcing the birth of Proloco.
At the end, Dan thanked the Proloco for having chosen Al Porreca for its name, and said that had Al been present he would have embraced everybody most warmly. (Click to read a translation of Dan Aspromonte's speech.)

Then Al's son Michael spoke, saying how honoured he felt at this recognition. He told how his father had come to Torricella 10 years previously, in January, and the priest had told him that people would not understand the sense of his researches, but Al did not listen, because he was so enthusiastic about this new place he had found, he was impassioned by this people, by his new family. Michael confessed that he himself had come to Torricella in order that his father would know that he too had been present at this moment when the Torricellan community was honouring him.

Another son, Andy, also chose to speak and he thanked everyone for the honour that Torricella had bestowed upon his father, saying "You know how much he had been influenced by Torricella and I want to let you know that I too have been influenced by it. My father was very intelligent and extremely generous; since he was so intelligent, he was convinced that he did not know everything, but I knew that he did know everything. Effectively, however, he lacked only this detail and at the moment that he discovered the existence of Torricella, he carried it out to the end. His dream was to unite these people and I believe that now he thanks you and sends you his greetings."

Finally the Mayor, Tiziano Teti :
"I congratulate Antonio and Dan for their speeches. Sometimes it amazes me that this Proloco was born only one year ago, because it has already organised so many events. From the earliest meetings, it was clear that there was something special within all of us, there was the idea that we wanted to make this rebirth come alive, the desire was to re-socialise, to unite the village, to create. Often it is said that nothing can be done in Torricella, yet now we find that so many things can be done. All it needs is plenty of goodwill. Albert was a symbol of union, we elected him to be the first Torricellan of the World and so I am really glad that this headquarters should be dedicated to him, also because there are so few of us left in Torricella and therefore it is most important that contacts should be renewed and re-established between those of us who live in Torricella and those who live elsewhere in the World."

After the speeches, there was loud applause and everyone hugged Al's widow and his children and those present enjoyed tasty refreshments of cakes, cooked meats, filled rolls and Spumanti, organised and offered by the inestimable ladies of the Proloco.

Al's relatives had brought with them from America a small bottle containing Al's ashes. The next morning they went to the contrada Stazzo Cavallo, the quarter where Al's grandfather had come from, and they scattered some of the ashes. Then they went to the Cemetery and then to the Colle dell'Irco hill, where they did the same thing. It was so moving.

At 21:30, after a supper at the Capè Restaurant, together with the young people of the Proloco and Al's family, we all went to the Onarmo hall, where the Vincent Persichetti Association was awaiting us, for the classical music concert.

The room was already packed. On stage was a shining grand piano, a microphone and a music-stand. The organisation was perfect. At ten o'clock everyone went quiet and it began. The President of the Musical Society, Rosanna Persichetti, after reminding us that this evening was in honour of Albert Porreca, whilst the actual inauguration of the Torricellan headquarters of the Society would take place in August, introduced the duo of guitarist and pianist, Caterina and Roberta Serpilli, her daughters, students at the G. Rossini conservatory in Pesaro. Caterina (23 years old) is in the 8th year of classical guitar and Roberta (19 years old) is in the 7th year of piano studies.
Caterina began with some guitar solos, demonstrating her excellent technical skills. Also she gave a very interesting introduction to each piece, explaining her method of reading each passage, the composer and the period. After an interval, there were duets with both the guitar and the piano, and the audience was highly delighted when they played well-known pieces like Henry Mancini's Moon River, Astor Piazzolla's Libertango and La Vita è Bella by Nicola Piovani. The public enjoyed it so much that they asked for two encores of La Vita è Bella and Libertango.
The girls were very happy both because they were applauded so much and because they had not expected to find such an attentive and knowledgeable audience, who waited for the ending of each piece and who stayed quiet during the performances.
President Rosanna was very happy too because of the warmth and appreciation shown by the audience. At the end of the concert, she announced that in the summer, for the inauguration of the Torricellan headquarters, she will present Vincent Persichetti's works, with special evening performances by other artists too. It was a wonderful evening and many people stayed on for another hour or so to talk with and congratulate the girls.
Next day, before leaving, Caterina gave me one of her CD's, with 13 tracks of her playing guitar with Cecilia Sanchini on flute. It was recorded live on 21st December 2008 in the Chiesa dell'Annunziata at Pescara.
I have to admit that I have been listening only to that CD when in my car. It is relaxing, a discovery and without a doubt a wonderful way of getting through the busy traffic in Rome.

Sunday was the golden wedding of Antonio Natale and Concetta Coladonato. 50 years ago it was celebrated by Don Giovanni Riva, the unforgettable parish Priest from Falloscoso. All the community of Torricella send them congratulations and best wishes.

Monastery at Tre Confini. A festa will be held at the Monastery of Tre Confini, one year on from its inauguration, on 9th July, on the occasion of the feast day of San Giovanni Guadalberto, founder of the Benedictine Community of Vallombrosa and protector of the Forrest Guards. In attendance will be both the Territorial Commander of the Forest Guards and the Bishop of Chieti, His Excellency Bruno Forte. On June 20th and 21st, there will be meetings for reflection and prayer lasting two days. Alessandro Teti's latest work, Il Salone, is now available in bookshops. It is a novel set in Abruzzo, between Lanciano and Torricella, full of memories of the author's own adolescence. As Ruggeri says in the preface, Alessandro "shows that he has never betrayed his land of origin, for which he has always demonstrated a great love". Alessandro was a great friend since our childhood, with whom we lived many happy moments and, together with Walter and Rodolfo Teti, when we were in our twenties, we compiled "La Rondine". Today he lives in Legnano (MI).

Paolo Tetiviola, aged 33 years, native of Bomba but living in Torricella for the past 11 years, is the new AVIS youth co-ordinator for the Province of Chieti. We send him our congratulations.

Henry Mancini (1924 –1994) was an Academy Award winning American composer, conductor and arranger. He is remembered particularly for being a composer of film and television scores. Mancini also won a record number of Grammy awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. His best-known works are the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series ("The Pink Panther Theme") and "Moon River".

Astor Piazzolla's Libertango
Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla (1921 –1992) was an Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. An excellent bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with different ensembles.
The bandoneón is a free-reed instrument particularly popular in Argentina and Uruguay. It plays an essential role in the orquesta tipica, the tango orchestra. The bandoneón, called bandonion by its German inventor, Heinrich Band (1821-1860), was originally intended as an instrument for religious music and the popular music of the day, in contrast to its predecessor, the German concertina (or Konzertina), considered to be a folk instrument by some modern authors.

Nicola Piovani -La Vita è Bella
Nicola Piovani (b. 1946, Rome, Italy) is an Academy Award winner classical light musician, and theatre and film score composer. He received his degree in piano from the Verdi Conservatory in Milan in 1967, and later studied orchestration under the Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis.
Rumours have abounded for years that Nicola Piovani was a pseudonym of better-known composer Ennio Morricone, a fact Piovani uses to humorous effect when speaking in public.
Among his more popular works is the score for the Federico Fellini film Intervista, his second of three collaborations with the famous director, the others being Ginger e Fred (Ginger and Fred) and La voce della luna (The Voice of the Moon). Years later, he composed a ballet entitled Balletto Fellini. In 1998, Piovani won the Best Original Dramatic Score Oscar for the score of the Roberto Benigni film La Vita è bella, better known to English-speaking audiences as Life Is Beautiful. In 2000, the same score was nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media" category, losing to Randy Newman.
To date, Piovani has over 130 film scores to his credit. However, he is reported to believe that, "Too many film scores make a composer a hack, but in the theatre music is above all craftsmanship." Accordingly, he continues to work in musical theatre, and also composes concert and chamber music.
