Il 7 giugno scorso, nella casa di riposo Ocean Villas in Santa Monica (California), si è spenta per una crisi respiratoria all’età di 91 anni Joyce Smart, vedova del grande scrittore John Fante, sceneggiatore per il cinema, che l’aveva sposata nel 1937 in segreto, non gradendo il loro matrimonio la facoltosa famiglia di lei. L’unione con John, dalla quale sono venuti quattro figli, è stata veramente solida e bella, come traspare nei romanzi dai forti richiami autobiografici dello scrittore, nato nel 1909 a Denver, in Colorado, da Nick Fante, emigrato abruzzese di Torricella Peligna, e Mary Capolungo.

Appena avuto notizia della scomparsa di Joyce Smart l’amministratore delegato dell’Istituto Cinematografico dell’Aquila, Goffredo Palmerini, ha inviato le condoglianze dell’Istituto al figlio Dan Fante, anch’egli scrittore di successo con dei romanzi tradotti in italiano: Agganci, Angeli a pezzi.

Nello scorso gennaio, in occasione della missione della “Lanterna Magica” e dell’Accademia dell’Immagine a Los Angeles, la delegazione delle due Istituzioni culturali ed il Sindaco dell’Aquila Biagio Tempesta avevano avuto con Dan Fante - presente all’evento tenuto da Gabriele Lucci* e Dante
Ferretti presso la UCLA University - un incontro molto cordiale, intessendo un forte rapporto di simpatia e d’amicizia con lo scrittore, innamorato dell’Abruzzo. Dan Fante ha fatto ieri pervenire a Palmerini una lettera di ringraziamento per essergli stato vicino in questa circostanza, comunicando che la scomparsa della mamma, con la quale egli ha vissuto un rapporto molto intenso, è avvenuta molto serenamente, mentre “…le leggevo il suo romanzo preferito, tenendole la mano”.

On June 7th, in Ocean Villas Retirement Home in Santa Monica, California, Joyce Smart, widow of the great author and screenwriter John Fante, died from respiratory failure at the age of 91. In 1937 she wed Fante in secret since her wealthy family did not approve of their marriage. They had four children and a truly stable, wonderful relationship evident in the strongly autobiographical reflections of the author in his novels. John Fante was born in 1909 in Denver, Colorado to Nick Fante, an Abruzzese emigrant from Torricella Peligna, and Mary Capolungo.

Goffredo Palmerini, managing director of the Cinema Institute of L’Aquila “The Magic Lantern”, sent condolences from the Institute to the son, Dan Fante, as soon as they received news of the death of Joyce Smart. Dan Fante is also a successful author with novels translated in Italian: Agganci (Mooch) and Angeli e pezzi (Chump Change).

Last January a delegation from the Cinema Institute of L’Aquila “The Magic Lantern” and the Academy of Imagery visited Los Angeles and sponsored an event at the University of California in Los Angeles held by Gabriele Lucci* and Dante Ferretti**. Dan Fante was in attendance. The delegation from the two cultural (film) institutes along with the Mayor of L’Aquila, Biagio Tempesta, had a very pleasant encounter with the author, and struck up a warm, friendly relationship with this writer who so loves Abruzzo. Yesterday Palmerini received a thank you letter from Dan Fante for reaching out to him at this moment in time. He said the death of his mother, with whom he had lived a very intense relationship, came very peacefully as “I read aloud her favorite novel and held her hand”.

JOYCE SMART FANTE mercoledì, il 8 giugno 2005 Joyce Smart Fante, residente di Point Dume da 55 anni e vedova del romanziere e sceneggiatore John Fante, si è spenta martedì alla Casa di Riposo Ocean Villas a Santa Monica nella California per una crisi respiratoria. Aveva 91 anni. Joyce Smart Fante, era una californiana di terza generazione e la figlia di Joseph Hutchins Smart, celebre sviluppatore di terreno nella California settentrionale durante la Corsa dell’Oro nell’19.mo secolo. Era anche un parente di Nathan Hale, eroe della Guerra di Rivoluzione (contro gli inglesi) ed una delle prime donne a frequentare l’Università di Stanford. Prima di raggiungere l’età di 20, era già una redattrice e aveva già pubblicato delle poesie sue. Ad un’età più avanzata, ha scritto dei saggi e delle poesie e ha curato il lavoro di suo marito. Lei lascia due figli, Dan e James, e una figlia Victoria Fante Cohen e 8 nipoti. Il funerale avrà luogo alla Chiesa di Our Lady of Malibu (Nostra Signora di Malibu) e lei verrà seppellita insieme con suo marito al Cimitero Holy Cross (Santa Croce) a Culver City. She was 91. Fante, a third-generation Californian and the daughter of Joseph Hutchins Smart, a famed 19th-century Northern California Gold Rush land developer, was a relative of Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale and one of the first women to attend Stanford University. An editor and published poet before the age of 20, Fante in her later years wrote essays and poetry and edited the work of her husband. Fante is survived by two sons, Dan and James, a daughter, Victoria Fante Cohen and eight grandchildren. A service is pending at Our Lady of Malibu Church. Fante will be buried with her late husband at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
