Torricellianos en Argentina Los Porreca en Tandil Remitido de Adrian Porreca  Tandil, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Año 2004. Esta sencilla historia, muy usual en nuestra Argentina, donde la mayoría de sus habitantes descienden de inmigrantes, describe los pasos vividos por esta familia en el siglo 20 y a comienzos del siglo 21. Pascual E. T. Porreca (1904-1988): Nació el 15 de Mayo de 1904 en Torricella Peligna, Provincia de Chieti, en el centro de Italia, situada entre los Apeninos y el Mar Adriático. Dentro del Parque Nacional de los Abruzzos, podemos encontrar el macizo del "Gran Sasso" (2914 m.), y la Maiella (2795 m.). Es posible (y muy agradable) apreciar la Maiela desde Torricella, descripción que Pascual hacía muy a menudo. Sus padres eran Fidel Porreca y Mariana Teti, y su familia era muy numerosa, donde el más mencionado era Carlos, el hermano mayor, Victorio, Concetta, Domenico (que emigró a Buffalo, U.S.A.) y dos hermanos muertos en la Guerra de Etiopía. Con ellos mantuvo contacto entrecortado a través de cartas, pero nunca pudo volver a verlos en persona. Fidel, su padre, tenía la herrería del pueblo. Todos los caballos, carruajes y utensilios eran moldeados en la forja y la bigornia de Fidel Porreca, quien era ayudado por sus hijos, incluído Pascual. Los tiempos difíciles que se vivían en Europa, pero, tal vez en este caso, los sueños de un joven de 23 años, y luego de algunas discusiones habituales con sus padres, llevaron a Pascual a tomar la decisión de emigrar hacia América. Desde un pequeño pueblo, sin siquiera conocer su propio país, y en este caso (como él reconociera más tarde) sin necesidades económicas de urgencia (pero sin embargo con la amenaza de guerra). Su familia vivía en la calle principal del pueblo, a una cuadra de la Iglesia, con su forja trabajando a toda hora y con buenos conocimientos escolares. Debajo se puede ver una imagen del Pasaporte de Pascual: Pasaporte Nro. 1661, emitido en Chieti, el 30 de Junio de 1922, Ocupación: Herrero - Sabe leer: Sí - Sabe escribir: Si - Altura: 1,62 m. - Frente Regular - Ojos Grises - Cabello: Negro - Destino: Buenos Aires   (chasque encendido las imágenes para una visión más grande) 1927: Con 23 años llega a la Argentina. Lo acompaña un Porreca Camillo que no era familiar, que se quedó en Buenos Aires y se casó pero no tuvo hijos. 1928: Luego de intentar trabajar en Buenos Aires decide utilizar un contacto de una familia italiana que vivía en Bahía Blanca, 700 km. al sur y allí se dirige y se radica. En ese año ya recibe una tarjeta postal de sus sobrinos junto al Abuelo Fidel. 1929: En una carta fechada en Torricella 11 de febrero de 1929, su Padre Fidel le reprocha no tener noticias y por qué sí le ha escrito a su amigo Ciro, es la primera comunicación con su padre, le comunica que si no encuentra el camino buscado, retorne que la puertas de su casa estaban siempre abiertas. Esta carta la guardamos donde se aprecia la calidad de la letra. Para el 10 de diciembre tenemos la tarjeta de saludos de fin de año de su hermana Concetta y su marido Humberto. Está dirigida a la calle Juan Knout Nro.' 452 de Ing. White (Bahía Blanca) Puerto. 1930-1936: O sea entre los 26 y 32 años su vida, transcurre entre Bahía Blanca e Ing. White, donde se rodea de un grupo de amigos que no olvidaría jamás, Chiconi, Mauri, Chiarelli y otros. 1937: Se casa con Perfecta Gandara, hija de españoles (Gallegos de Pontevedra) con quintas a las afueras de Bahía Blanca (Villa Serra). Los abuelos de Perfecta eran carreros muy importantes en esa época que realizaban el transporte entre Bahía Blanca y Buenos Aires. Los Gandara eran muy conocidos por su corralón en Villa Mitre. Su Padre José ya tenía dos hijos, Antonia y Héctor (españoles) cuando nació Perfecta, viajaban a España con frecuencia y en uno de esos viajes 14 de Febrero de 1917 nace en Pontevedra. Luego tendría dos hermanos más: Generosa y Emilio (Argentinos). Averiguando por Pontevedra, Vigo, encontramos una población llamada Gandara - Camino a Tuy población que se encuentra sobre el río del mismo nombre que divide la frontera con Portugal, o sea Tuy sería el pueblo de origen de esta familia. 1938: Ya trabajaba en los ferrocarriles, su presencia estaba entre los elevadores del Puerto de Ing. White y el mantenimiento del pozo principal de Agua del Parque de mayo en Bahía Blanca. El 29 de Julio nace Ana Argentina en una muy humilde casa de White en la calle Puncler. La felicidad y la alegría había hecho renacer al Torricellano que al son de la música y los festejos conmovió al barrio. Con este nacimiento iba a recordar que su padre le dijo si es mujer se llamará Ana, pero ya también comenzaba a sentir su nueva patria y la llamó Argentina. 1939: Parte de Bahía Blanca a Tandil. El 20 de Junio (Día de la Bandera Argentina). Recordemos que su partida de Nápoles fue un 9 de Julio (Fecha de la Declaración de la Independencia Argentina) claro que Pascual ésto no lo sabía. Ese día iba a producir su segundo desarraigo muy fuerte, principalmente para Perfecta que dejaba a su padre y cuatro hermanos para partir a una ciudad desconocida a 350 kilómetros sin amigos, sin vivienda y por sólo una mejora de 0,30 centavos la hora en su sueldo. Ese fue el motivo del traslado con Ana de 11 meses. 1940: Tandil - Barrio de la Estación. Pascual realizó un viaje previo para ver su trabajo, posiblemente cuando vio las Sierras de las Animas recordó la Maiela y entonces sí el destino está atado a las decisiones que van tomando los hombres en el transcurso de su vida. Creo que en ese momento él eligió esta ciudad para vivir y morir en ella. Llega Perfecta y Ana, lluvia, barro en todas la calles y un destino incierto. Los hermanos Artero, almacén de ramos generales, de 11 de septiembre y Arana, serían receptores de la familia, otros amigos, la familia Lueje dispondría de una pequeña habitación de chapa en Arana 1555 (Hoy Jardín de Infantes Ricardo Zarini) Familia Malisia, Petovelo, Acosta, Calvo serían sus amigos. El 4 de Octubre nace Alberto Fidel, otra vez el cumplimiento con el Nono Fedele por un lado, y además Alberto por el novio de la hija de Lueje (luego su marido). 1941-1942: La familia estaba formada, el trabajo era mucho para poder mantener y mejorar posiciones con trabajo y humildad, y así comenzar a crear el futuro de esta familia descendiente de Torricellianos.

Torricellani in Argentina   The Porreca's in Tandil Submitted by Adrian Porreca  Tandil, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Year 2004. This simple story, humble, very frequent in our Argentina where most of the population are immigrants, describes the path lived by this family in the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Pasquale E. T. Porreca (1904-1988): He was born on May 15th, 1904 in Torricella Peligna, Province of Chieti, in the center of Italy, situated between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Inside the Abruzzo National Park, we can find the "Gran Sasso" (2914 m.) mountain, and the Maiella (2795 m.). It is possible (and very pleasant) to appreciate the Maiella from Torricella, a description that Pasquale made very often. He was the son of Fedele Porreca and Mariana Teti, and his family was very large; the most mentioned were Carlos, the oldest brother, Victorio, Concetta, Domenico (who emigrated to Buffalo, N.Y., U.S.A.) and two brothers who died in the  Ethiopian War. He kept up continuous contacts with all of them with letters, but he would never again see them face to face. Fedele, his father, had the forge in the town. All the horses, carriages and stencils were molded in the forge and on the anvil of Fedele Porreca, who was helped by his sons, Pasquale included. There were hard times in Europe, and in this case the dreams of a 23 year old young man, after some typical discussions with his father, made Pasquale take the decision to leave to go to America. From a little town, without even knowing his own country, and in this case (as he recognized later) not having urgent economics needs (and of course with the threat of war looming). His family lived on the main street of the town, one block from the church, with his forge working full time and with a good education. He comes with Camillo Porreca (not related to him), who stayed in Buenos Aires and got married but didn´t have children. 1928: After trying to work in Buenos Aires he decides to use a contact from an italian family who lived in Bahía Blanca, 700 km. south of Buenos Aires, so he goes and settles there. In that year, he receives a post card of his nephews next to Nono Fedele . 1929: In a letter dated in Torricella Peligna, February 11th, 1929, his father Fedele reproaches him for not having news and asked why had Pascual written to a friend, and not to his father. This was the first contact with his father, and his father also said that if he didn't find what he wanted, he could return home because the doors were always open for him. We keep this letter and we can appreciate the good writing quality. . On December 10th, we have the "New Year" card from his sister Concetta and her husband Humberto. It is written to the address: Juan Knout Street, Number 452 at Ing. White (Bahía Blanca) Port.   1930-1936: Between 26 and 32 years old, his life take place in Bahía Blanca and Ing. White, where he knows a group of friends who never would forget: Chiconi, Mauri, Chiarelli and others. 1937: He married to Perfecta Gandara, spanish descendant (from Pontevedra) with farms outside Bahía Blanca (Villa Serra). Perfecta grandparents worked with carriages. This work was very important in those times, they made transports between Bahía Blanca and Buenos Aires. Gandara’s family was very well known because of their company in Villa Mitre. Her father José already had two child, Antonia and Héctor (spanish) when Perfecta was born, they traveled to Spain very often and in one of those trips, February 14th 1917, she was born in Pontevedra. Later there will be one more sister and one brother: Generosa and Emilio (Argentine). Looking for Pontevedra, Vigo, we can find a town called Gandara – Camino a Tuy, that is on the river with the same name that divides Spain from Portugal, so Tuy would be the town of origin for this family. 1938: He was working in railway, between the elevators of Puerta de Ing.White and the maintenance of the main well at "Mayo Park" in Bahía Blanca. On July 29th, Ana Argentina was born in a very humble white house on Puncler street. Happiness again appeared to the Torricellani, who "shook" the neighborhood with music and celebration. With her birth, he remembered his father who told him that, if he had a daughter, her name would be Ana, but he also felt for his new country and he named her Argentina.   1939: He leaves Bahía Blanca for Tandil on June 20th (Commemoration of Argentina´s Flag). Let’s remember that he left from Napoli on July 9th (Independence Day of Argentina) but of course Pascual didn’t know this. That day, he had the second hard uprooting, mainly for Perfecta who left her father and four brothers to go to an unknown city 350 kilometers far away without friends, homeless and for  just .30 cents an hour more in pay. That was the reason for transferring with Ana, who was just 11 months old. 1940: Tandil – Railway Station Neighborhood. Pascual had made an earlier trip to look for his next work. Maybe when he saw the 'Sierras de las Animas', it reminded him of the Maiella, and thereby we can affirm that fate is what ties men to the decisions they make in their lives. I think, he chose this city, in that moment, for living and dying in it.   Then, Ana and Perfecta arrive. Rain, mud all over the streets and an uncertain destiny. Artero’s brothers, who had a wholesale warehouse at the corner of 11 de Septiembre and Arana streets, would be the family receptors. Other friends, Lueje’s family, had a little sheet room at 1555th Arana (Ricardo Zarini Kindergarden  nowadays). The Malisia family, Petovelo, Acosta, and Calvo would be their friends. On October 4th, Alberto Fidel was born, and Pascual make honor again to Nono Fedele, and also Alberto because of the boyfriend of Lueje’s daughter (her husband later).   1941-1942: The family was formed, now there was much to be done to keep and improve their economical position  with work and humbleness, and this way, they started to build the future of this family of Torricellani descent.
